Why PDF Studio: Free PDF Tools With No Watermarks, No Limits, No Sign-up

You've been there. You upload a PDF, click "compress", wait thirty seconds, and then a banner appears: "Your free trial has expired. Upgrade to download." The file you just processed is locked behind a paywall. You close the tab and search for something else.

Every major "free" PDF tool has a catch. Here's what those catches look like in practice - and what PDF Studio does instead.

The Catch List

Smallpdf

Two free tasks per day. That's it. Once you hit the limit, you get a countdown timer until midnight. If you're processing payslips for a small team on a Monday morning, two tasks won't get you far.

iLovePDF

Merging is capped at 25 files per batch, with a 100 MB total upload limit on the free tier. Exceed either threshold and you're prompted to subscribe. The limits reset daily, but they're tight enough to catch you on real workloads.

PDFescape

The first use feels genuinely free. The second time you return, it asks you to create an account. The third time, features that worked before are now labelled "Premium." The goalposts move quietly.

Adobe Acrobat Online

Adobe's online tools exist to funnel you toward a subscription. The free tier lets you convert one file at a time, with a strict monthly cap and prominent "Go Premium" buttons on every result page.

What PDF Studio Does Differently

No watermark on output. The PDF you download is clean - no "Processed by PDF Studio" stamp, no blurred pages, no corner badge. What goes in comes out.

No daily task limit. Compress ten files. Merge twenty. Run OCR on a full archive. There is no counter ticking down in the background.

No sign-up, no email collection. You don't have an account here. There's no login screen, no verification email, no marketing list you're joining by clicking "Get started."

Files auto-delete in one hour. Uploaded files are removed from the server within sixty minutes of processing. We don't train on your documents, we don't index them, and we don't retain them for analytics.

100 MB per upload. Most compressed PDFs and scanned documents fit comfortably within this limit. For larger files, split the batch.

1. Compress PDF - Shrink file size while preserving readable quality. Useful before attaching to email or uploading to a portal with a size cap.

2. Merge PDF - Combine multiple PDFs into one. Drag to reorder pages before merging.

3. PDF to JPG/PNG - Export each page as a high-resolution image. Useful when a recipient's system can't open PDFs or when you need to embed a page in a presentation.

4. Password-Protect PDF - Add a password to any PDF before sharing sensitive documents. Uses 256-bit AES encryption.

5. Unlock PDF - Remove password protection from PDFs you own, when you know the password.

6. PDF OCR - Extract selectable text from scanned PDFs. Supports 100+ languages including Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, and Bengali. See the OCR guide for language details.

7. ID Card to PDF - Place the front and back of a driver's license, national ID, or employee badge onto a single A4 page. Useful for KYC submissions, onboarding packets, and visa applications. The ID card guide explains layout options.

8. Passport Photo to PDF - Format a passport-size photo to standard dimensions on an A4 sheet for printing.

9. PDF Table to Excel - Detect tables in a PDF and export them as an editable .xlsx file.

How We Stay Free

PDF Studio is funded by optional donations and kept lean: the frontend runs on Vercel's free tier, the backend on Render, and file storage on Fly.io with short TTLs. There are no ads on tool pages. No affiliate links disguised as recommendations.

If a tool saves you twenty minutes, consider hitting the donate button. If not, use it anyway - that's the point.

What's Coming

The backlog includes features we hear about most: eSign (sign and request signatures directly in the browser), redaction (black out sensitive text before sharing), PDF to Word conversion, and Word to PDF conversion.

These take time to build correctly, so we'd rather ship them well than rush. When they land, they'll be free with the same rules as everything else here.
